The Double Life of Ariel Crawford is a
50-chapter, 438-page novel about Ariel Crawford (duh) and her mother,
Jessica. Jessica had Ariel when she was 16 years old, and as the novel
opens, she is a well-meaning but naive single mom trying to raise her
daughter on a waitress' salary. Ariel is six years old and struggling with
the first grade. She is, to some degree, intellectually and emotionally
immature compared to her peers, and consequently has difficulty succeeding
in school. As the stress of being a below-average student gets to her, she
begins wetting her bed and then her pants, prompting a rather long journey
back to babyhood. Jessica tries to be sympathetic but gives her daughter pull-ups to save the sheets. At first, Ariel is horrified but slowly begins to like them and tries to keep this a secret. On a family trip, however, she discovers that her older cousin Caitlin wears diapers for bedwetting and readily admits to liking them. When Caitlin moves closer, she and Ariel become good friends and Ariel soon tries her diapers on and, of course, gets caught. She tells her mom that she likes them, and Jessica, though shocked and concerned, decides to let her keep them, at least for the time being. Ariel soon discovers that wearing diapers isn't all fun and games, as some of her classmates are less than accepting. As the story goes on, she matures from a clingy kindergartener to a more outgoing eight-year-old, and finally begins to wonder if the diapers are really what she needs. |
